Everywhere we turn, there is someone who feels the need to offer their own version of sage advice. Whether it is a friend, family member, or stranger, everyone has the guidebook for navigating life. Some common pieces of advice are gems. They give you insight into the things that you can only learn from personal experience or the experiences of others. While the intent is well-meaning, for the most part, some pieces of advice are harmful.

Below I outline 10 common pieces of advice that stand out to me. Each are well-meaning, but could potentially take the situation from harmless to iffy:
On Relationships
- “Treat people in the same manner that they treat you”
This would have been coined by people who have been hurt before. They are disappointed by the way they have been treated by others. An individual may perceive their own treatment of other people as kindhearted and positive. When this intentional kindness is not returned, this may leave them feeling that hurt tenfold.
